Frank Anthony Memorial Debates 2017

The Preliminary rounds of The Frank Anthony Memorial debates 2017 were held at various venues throughout India. La Martiniere College participated in both senior and junior divisions. The junior division  team comprised of Raajveer Singh Bisht and Shiv Sawhney. The team were declared the first runners-up. Raajveer Singh Bisht was adjudged the best speaker of the debate.In the senior division, the team comprised of Varenya Vir Singh and Shikhar Tripathi. The team was declared the first runners-up and Varenya Vir Singh was adjudged the best speaker of the debate. Both the teams qualified for the second round which would be held later in the year.

Special Assembly to Mark Bastille Day

The students of French in the middle school conducted a special assembly in French to commemorate the 14th of July as Bastille Day. The students addressed the entire school and enlightened the pupils about Bastille Day. The boys recited the Lord’s Prayer in French which was translated into English as well. The boys who had birthdays felt privileged to be wished in French. The programme concluded with the singing of the French National Anthem as well as the Indian National Anthem.

Excellence in the field of Cricket.


La Martiniere College Cricket team participated in the 17th  Annual Major R.K Goldstein Memorial Cricket Tournament held from  9th May to 13th May, 2017 at The Bishop Cotton School, Shimla. Apratim Tiwari of class 8 was declared  the ‘Best Bowler’ of the Tournament. He claimed 12 wickets in 3 matches. He was also awarded the trophy for being ‘The Man  of the Match’ in the first match of the tournament against Vivek High School from Chandigarh.

N.C.C Air Wing Camp

The N.C.C Air Wing cadets attended a 10 day Combined Annual Training Camp from  11th  May,17 to   20th  May, 2017 at the  Military Station in Barabanki. The following cadets won prizes: Hardik Sharma stood second in the Essay Writing competition while Anansh Ranjan and Hamza Alvi stood first and second respectively in the Poster Making competition. Memorial Service for the soul of Mrs Sheila Simlai

A Memorial Service for the repose of the soul of Mrs Sheila Simlai was held on Friday, 7th July, 2017. The service was conducted by the Principal, Mr C.A McFarland in the College Chapel. Mrs Simlai was laid to rest on 7th June, 2017 at the Nishatganj Christian Cemetery. The Memorial Service was attended by the staff, students, relatives and friends of the Simlai family. The scripture reading was done by Aditya Joshi, the School Captain of the Junior School. Rev. Raymond Paul of The Epiphany Church, Lucknow, gave a sermon. Relatives, friends and students reminisced about Mrs Simlai. The college choir and the staff choir sang hymns appropriate for the occasion. The Benediction was pronounced by Rev. Raymond Paul

The State Flower & Vegetable Show

The gardeners of La Martiniere College, under the supervision of Mr. Alfred Gomes have been bringing laurels to La Martiniere College year after year.  This year too La Martiniere College  won 64 prizes in the various categories. The following are a few of the prizes won : The Cemetery Garden won the first prize while the Bachelor’s Mess Garden, the Restoration Park , The East Terrace garden and the Junior School garden won the second prize. In all our school gardeners won 15 first prizes, 29 second prizes and 20 third prizes. The school gardeners have been handsomely awarded cash prizes for their hard work.

Interactive session with parents

An interactive session between the parents of pupils of class 8 with the Principal was held on the 26th February, 2017 in Spence Hall. The parents were also informed about the various combinations of subjects their wards could opt for in class 9 in the coming academic year. Furthermore , Mr. Hitesh Keshwani , an educationist and career counselor, spoke to the parents on the topics of an ideal profession and an  ideal choice of subjects.

Innogen

Innogen, a science model making and display competition was held on the 25th February, 2017. The venue for the event was Spence Hall . This was organized by a group of Class 8 pupils namely Labib Khan, Vedansh Singh and Shashwat Dixit. There were 27 participants in this event with their very innovative models on display. Models were judged for their originality, creativity and viability to the present scenario. The ATM machine, the laser beam burglar alarm and the resounding potato canon impressed the judges the most.

Boxing back at Mart

Boxing had been reintroduced as  sport at La Martiniere College some time back. But now it has been recognized as a House event too. The Finals of the Inter House Boxing Tournament was held on Saturday , 25th February, 2017. The event was held on East Terrace. The Chief Guest for the event was Mr. Douglas Shepherd, President of the Lucknow Boxing Association . Mr. Shepherd has also been the coach of the Junior Boxing team of India as well as the chief coach at the National Institute of sports at Kolkata. The Guest of Honour for the evening was Prof. Anil Misra, General Secretary  U.P Boxing Association and Vice –President of the Boxing Federation of India. The results of the Tournament were as the follows. In the Colts Division, Lyons House stood first and in the Junior and Senior Divisions, Martin House took the top slot. The Overall Championship Trophy for the year 2016-17 went to  Martin House. Jason D’Nacio of Cornwallis House was declared as the Best Boxer and Aman Misra of Martin House  was judged as the most Scientific Boxer  for the year 2016-17.

Art Exhibition -2017

The Annual Art Exhibition was organized by the Art Department (Middle and Senior School ) of La Martiniere College on the 22nd and the 23rd February, 2017. The venue for the exhibition was Spence Hall. The exhibition was inaugurated by Dr. Bhupesh C. Little. Mr. Little is a senior faculty member at the Arts and Crafts Department of the Lucknow University. The exhibition consisted of canvas paintings, kettle paintings, rope designing, tie an die work, paintings on canvas shoes and stones and tile designing.

Farewell to the Batch 2017

The day’s proceedings started with the Annual farewell photograph on East Terrace. All the boys  came dressed in western attire. After the photograph was taken, all the boys were led into the chapel for a special  chapel service. Following this  the boys were given  souvenirs by their respective class teachers and were led into  Spence hall. A Guard of Honuor was presented to them by the present class 11. Varenya Vir Singh of class 11  addressed the boys of class 12 . This was followed by a speech by Aditya Jalan of the batch of 2017. The boys of class 11 put up a wonderful performance of dance and songs. A fashion show was conducted. The following won titles in the fashion show : Shemron Gabriel was judged as ‘Mr Martiniere’, Utkarsh Singh, the 1st runners-up, Revant Bhalla  as  ‘Mr Suave’  and 2nd runners- up while Aditya Jalan won the title for being the  ‘Gentleman of the Year’. Following this was a splendid show of fireworks.  Soon after this the boys were led onto the Principal’s lawn for dinner.

Investiture Ceremony 2017

The Investiture Ceremony for Pupil Authorities took place on the 4th of February, 2017.  The ceremony started with a chapel service followed by the oath taking ceremony. The former College Captain, Adrin Aitkins and Vice-Captain Utkarsh Singh with their team led the Procession with the new pupil authorities following them. The ceremony started with the oath taking  by the new College Captain 2017, Sarthak Kumar followed by Vedansh Tandon, the College Vice-Captain for the year 2017 . This was followed by the oath-taking by New Pupil Authorities of various houses.

Inter Martiniere Junior Cricket Match

 

Junior Cricket Team from La Martiniere for Boys, Kolkata arrived in Lucknow on a three day visit to Lucknow from the 29th to the 31st January, 2017. On the 30th of January, 2017 an Inter Martiniere Junior Cricket match was held. The match took place at the Fairydale Ground of La Martiniere College. It commenced at 10.30 am.  La Martiniere College, Lucknow won the match by making 71 runs without loss.

68th Republic Day Celebration

The College celebrated the 68th Republic Day of India on the 26th January, 2017. The Chief Guest for the day was Brig. H.M.S Chattwal. Brig Chattwal is the deputy director of N.C.C for the state of Uttar Pradesh. He is also associated with the Hodson’s Horse regiment. A parade comprised of the N.C.C (army wing), the Air wing, the Naval wing, the Rovers, Scouts and Cubs. The parade was commanded by Rajveer Mathur. The National Flag was unfurled by our Chief Guest, Brig .Chattwal. The parade was inspected by Brig Chattwal. This was followed by a brief introduction of the Chief Guest by the Principal. Brig Chattwal addressed the boys and told them to work hard in order to achieve success in life and later took the salute.

On the 26 th January, 2017 the new Boat House was inaugurated.  Also  the newly acquired, Cox rowing boats from Hong Kong were dedicated to the College. The Chief Guest for this event was Dr. I.D. Sharma of the Rowing Federation of India.

Annual Christmas Cantata

The Annual Christmas Programme  and  Cantata,  2016 was held in Spence Hall . The programme began  with  ‘The Service of Nine Lessons and Carols’ presented by the college chapel choir .This was followed the ‘Halleluiah Chorus’ presented by the Silent Monks of Dormitory 3.Next came the Christmas Jazz in which the students performed on’ Santa Claus is coming to town’ , ‘Let it snow! ‘and ‘Jingle Bells’. The major event of the evening was the Christmas Cantata ‘Sing We All Noel’ presented by the joint choirs of La Martiniere Girls’ College and La Martiniere College , Lucknow. The Christmas message was given by Rev .Samuel Mathai (Alumnus 1989).Our Principal Mr.McFarland gave the Vote of Thanks. The event came to an end with performance by the Skating club of La Martiniere College.

Sports Day 2016

The 134th Annual Sports Day at La Martiniere College was held on Saturday, the 26th November, 2016.

The Daylong event started with the Junior School sports and physical training display at 9:00 am at Polo grounds. The event started with an Equestrian display by the students of the Junior school campus. The main event consisted of house races and physical training displays of class 1 to 4. The chief guest for the occasion was Mrs. Juhie Singh , Chairperson , Uttar Pradesh Commission for Protection of Child Rights.

The Sports and Physical Training display of the students of the Constantia campus began at 1:00 pm. The Chief Guest for the event was Mr. Noel Peters, an alumnus of the college. Mr. Peters received the College colours for Athletics in the year 1963. He now resides in Australia. The senior Equestrian squad put up an excellent display. The various races like the 4×100 m relay, the 110 m hurdles, the 5000 m cycle race and the past vs. present vs. the staff relay took place. Intra class competition for the best Physical Training display was held. Class 6 won this competition. Adrin Aitkins was decorated with College colours for his excellence in the field of Athletics. Mr. Noel Peters gave away the medals and awards to the prize winners. Martin House won the Central Command Trophy. The event ended with the March-past of Athletes and the beating of the retreat.

Children’s day was celebrated on the 12th of November.  At Assembly, the Captains and Vice Captains of the four houses emulated the actions of their respective Housemasters. Adrin Aitkins , the College Captain conducted the assembly donning the role of the Principal. Thereafter the students were given treat boxes. The teachers put together a short programme for the students. The programme comprised of a choir, a solo song and a fashion show.

Constantia

Constantia 2016  – a one day programme,  was held on the 22nd October, 2016. This was conducted by a group of students who work under the banner of LEO- La Martinere College Extra-curricular organization. A total number of 13 schools participated from all over the city. Some of the major events that took place were the Battle of bands, Pirouette, Token script, Bicorage, Nukkad Natak, Pandora’s box and Nibbles. The programme started with the registration of teams beginning at 8.30 am outside Spence Hall and finished with the Principal’s address at around 8.00 pm. Jashn Jethanandani, the student in charge of the event, gave the vote of thanks . La Martiniere College was declared the overall winner and was awarded the Champions trophy while La Martiniere Girls’ College was declared the runners-up.

Inauguration of the Alliance Francaise

The Ambassador of France to India , Mr. Alexandre Ziegler, inaugurated the Alliance de Francaise Lucknow  center at the Stobart Hall in La Martiniere College on Sunday, the 9th October,2016.

The Ambassador also conferred a French Government distinction, Medal of Honour for distinguished service, to Mr.  Ansar-ud-Din.  Mr Ansar -ud-Din and his team are instrumental in the renovation and restoration of Constantia.

The French Ambassador also released a  coffee table book . The book showcases  the Tomb of Boulone Lise . This book is the first of a series of coffee table books.

Mr  Bikhchandani is the founder of a leading job searching portal. Pandit Bhajan Sopori performed for the resident scholars in the Spence Hall. He was accompanied by Pt. Mithlesh Jha on the Tabla and Ms. Veethika Tikoo on the Santoor.

Pandit Bhajan Sopori (born 1948 in Srinagar, Kashmir) belongs to the Sufiana gharana of Indian classical music.He runs a music academy called “SaMaPa” ( Sopori Academy for Music and Performing Arts). He has composed over 5,000 songs)

Cal Meet 2016

La Martiniere College hosted the 71st Annual Inter Martiniere meet from the 21st of August, 2016. The proceedings began with the arrival of the contingent from Kolkata, followed by a chapel service at La Martiniere College, to commemorate the event.

On the 22nd of August, 2016, a Basketball match was held at La Martiniere Girls College, Lucknow, between La Martiniere for Girls  Kolkata and Lucknow. Lucknow won the match by scoring 55 against 28 baskets. A debate was held in the evening between the boys’ Colleges of Lucknow and Kolkata in Spence Hall. The topic being, ‘We are happier than our forefathers’. Lucknow proposed the motion. The motion was defeated.

In the morning of the 23rd  August, 2016, a swimming competition was held between the boys’ Colleges of Lucknow and Kolkata, at La Martiniere College. Lucknow  did outstandingly well in the Colts and Junior division, but faced tough competition in the Senior division. Overall, Kolkata won by twenty points. A debate was held at La Martiniere Girls’ College, Lucknow in the evening, which was won by the Lucknow girls.

The swimming competition for the girls was held on the 24th of August, 2016, in the morning at La Martiniere Girls College, Lucknow, where Kolkata won the competition by 62 points. A football match  followed in the afternoon on Polo grounds. Kolkata was defeated by Lucknow. The score being 5-1.

A social was organised in the evening for the teams in Spence hall at La Martiniere College.

The Kolkata team departed on the 25th  August 2016.

Annual Hindi Entertainment Programme

The Annual Hindi Entertainment Programme was held was held on the 15th August, 2016 The hosts of the programme were Abhinav Raj, Sanwal Kumar Agarwal of the Senior section and Adit Joshi of the Junior section. The programme started with the lighting of the lamp by our Heads of departments, accompanied by our Principal. The programmes were related to patriotism and sacrifice for the freedom of our Nation. The programme comprised of songs, dances and plays performed by the boys of our Junior, Middle and Senior school. The title of the play presented by the boys of the Junior Campus play was ‘Akbar Birbal and Chamatkari Gadha’ while that of senior school was ‘Uski Maa’.

The play ended with our Principal addressing the college.  The prize for histrionics in Hindi which was awarded to Nilesh Ghosh who enacted the role of  ‘Zamindar’ in the senior school play ‘Uski Maa’.

The event concluded with the singing of the National Anthem.

Our College celebrated the 69th Independence Day of our Country. The Chief Guest for this year was Lt. Col. Anil Srivastava, an alumnus of the College. A parade comprising of the N.C.C (Army Wing), Navy Wing, Air Wing, Rovers and Clubs was presented. The Chief Guest  unfurled the National Flag. Lt. Col. Anil Srivastava addressed the boys and told them about the three priorities that the officers of the Armed Forces have, first the welfare of the nation, Second the welfare of the men that a person commands ; and the last comes the welfare of his family and himself. He thereafter took the salute.

An organization by the name of “COGNITIO” organised the ‘COGNITIO QUIZ’ for all class 12th students. Karan Singh Dhillon and Aditya Mishra were declared winners in the Stage Round comprising 6 teams after qualifying the Preliminary round. They will now be representing the school in the Semi Final Round to be held at “PSIT” Kanpur on 28th August, 2016.

The Martin Memorial Debate was held on Monday, 1st August, 2016 in Spence Hall at La Martiniere College. The debae was chaired by Mrs Afshan Khan. The topic for the debate was “College admission have become too competitive and have no place for the average student thus defeating the purpose of educating the masses”. Our College team, comprising of Varenya Vir Singh, Vignesh Melhotra, Shikhar Tripathi and Aditya Jalan opposed the Motion and won the debate. Shekhar Tripathi won the Best Speaker award.

La Martiniere College, organized the second edition of Techtria, an interschool multimedia based event on the 30th of July. The event consisted of various IT and Media based events like Revelations – the IT Quiz, Buzz Off – the Tech Extempore, Flip Flop – Tech Turncoat debate, and Enigma – the Digital Treasure Hunt. Sixteen schools participated in this event, including La Martiniere Girls College, St. Agnes Loreto and many others. La Martiniere College won the overall Trophy.

One of the biggest head-turners was Gamer’s Nirvana. The first round consisted of Need for Speed – Most Wanted, a car racing game. Only the top 4 participants could move on to the next round, which was Call of Duty – Black Ops 3, a first person shooter game, and only saw 2 participants move on to the next round which was FIFA.

Revelations, the quiz received great response from the audience, answer questions based on their favourite technology and games. The quizmaster was Vighnesh Mehrotra, a class 10 student, La Martiniere College was placed third.

Roopali Neeraj, a pupil of La Martiniere Girls’ College was  able to answer the entire 16 problem treasure hunt in just 24 minutes in an event called ‘Enigma’.

The closing ceremony featured a very spirited Prize Distribution Ceremony .

The Combined Army Training N.C.C Camp was held at La Martiniere College, Lucknow from 17th to 26th June, 2016. 525 cadets from different schools and colleges across the state participated in the camp.

La Martiniere College was declared the Best Contingent.

Varun Rana of class 6E won a Silver Medal in the Junior Light Weight category at the 2nd International Taekwondo Championship at Thimpu, Bhutan which was held from the 20th to 22nd June 2016.

La Martiniere College was represented at the shooting competition at Haldwani. Sanskar Havelia was awarde the Gold Medal in the Junior category. The College was also represented by Ali Raiyaan Khan in the 22 rifle shooting competition. He was awarded the Bronze medal in the senior category. Sanskar Havelia won the Silver Medal in the 177 peep sight category. While Alwaaz Asif and Tabish Ahmad won the Silver medal and Branze medal in the Junior Category.

Dr Samuel Slater Debate

A team of 4 boys participated in the 21st Rev. Dr Samuel Slater Debate organised by Bishop Cotton School, Shimla. Out of 16 National and International teams, La Martiniere College qualified till the semi – final round.

Varenya Vir Singh was awarded third prize for being ‘Best Speaker’ of the Tournment.

A team of 4 boys participated in the World School Debating championship held at GD Goenka, Lucknow. The team ended as the runner up of Lucknow, with Varenya Vir Singh being awarded the ‘Best Speaker’ The team comprised of
Aryaman Kohli, Vignesh Mehrotra, Vedansh Tandon, Varenya Vir Singh 
Varenya Vir Singh also qualified for the National Finale to be held in Delhi

Assembly in French to mark Bastille Day

A Special assembly was held by the Students of French of the middle school to commemorate the 14th of July as Bastille Day. The Principal in his address enlightened the boys about the significance of this day and its importance to the various democracies of the world. The boys recited the Lord’s Prayer in French. A presentation in French regarding the significance and importance of this day was given which was also translated into English by the boys. The programme concluded with the singing of the French National Anthem followed by the Indian National Anthem.
