Reserve Bank of India Quiz – 2015

The Reserve Bank of India Quiz was held on 13th October, 2015 at the UP Sangeet Natak Academy, Lucknow. Our College was represented by Ayush Nigam of 10- C and Samarth Srivastava of 11-C who qualified for the stage round and won the runners -up trophy.  The winners were given gift vouchers worth Rs. 1000/- to buy books from Universal Booksellers Hazratganj.

Holiday Notice for Junior School

Classes in the Junior School Campus (Nursery to 4) shall remain closed on Tuesday, 13 October, 2015 on account of Maharaja Agrasen Jayanti.

Students of the Middle and Senior School shall attend the SPIC MACAY Programmes as per the instructions provided. The programmes shall conclude by the normal closing time for College.

The Staff of the Junior School Campus is invited to watch the programmes in Spence Hall. Resident Scholars of the Junior School are invited to watch the programme.

A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Lecture

To perpetuate the memory of former president, Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, La Martiniere College instituted an annual ‘A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Lecture’ on his Birth Anniversary. An Academic Session was organized in the Spence Hall in which-
The panelists:-
1. Mr. Srijan Pal Singh– OSD to Dr. Abdul Kalam and co- author of 3 books with him, talked about his experience with APJ Kalam and how his sensitivity and gratitude towards people made him an extraordinary person.
2. Prof. Abhishek Mishra – Minister of State to Hon’ble Chief Minister (Science and Technology). – He talked about six aspects that he learnt from Dr. Kalam and how can we imbibe these to change our lives to be a better individual.
3. Mrs. Madhvi Kukreja – A women’s rights activist and founder, Sanat Kada NGO. – highlighted the importance of each individual in the society and how mothers are undermined in that aspect.
4. Mr. Akash Banerjee– Alumnus and Media personality –talked about the striving for excellence in life by having a focused vision and executing it as well.

SPICMACAY organised a Kathak Dance Performance on 5th of October 2015 at La Martiniere College, Spence Hall in which famous danseuse Rani Khanam of Lucknow Gharana enthralled the audience with her splendid performance. She also taught students about the different aspects of Kathak Dancing which included-
Sawal Jawab- Where the danseuse responds the musical beats with Ghunghroo.
Jugalbandi- In which recitals on tabla are synchronised with the musical steps of feet.
The Thumri (romantic or devotional in nature, and usually revolves around a girl’s love for Krishna. The lyrics are usually in Uttar Pradesh dialects of Hindi called Awadhi and Brij Bhasha. Thumri is characterized by its sensuality, and by a greater flexibility with the raag) along with its reflection in the dance.

Gandhi Jayanti

A Service of Peace in honour of Mahatma Gandhi, on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti was held in the College Chapel. The welcome speech was given by the Vice Principal Mr. P.V.Collins . He highlighted the three major elements which Gandhiji led stress on which are  Peace, Satyagrah and Non-violence . The garlanding of portrait of Mahatma Gandhi was done by the College Captain Mohd. Kamran , Vice Captain Raghav Kohli, and the two youngest resident scholars, Leander J Ceiston and Dominic Evan.The prayer service included the prayers from all the religions which were read by stidents . An extract from the Bhagwat Gita was read by Mohd. Saqlain. Different aspects of the personality of Mahatma Gandhi which reflect his simplicity and made him the Father of the Nation , were explained by the Principal MrC.McFarland .

La Martiniere College celebrated its 170th year of the commencement of  formal classes  in the Constantia Building .Mrs Rana Safvi, an eminent blogger and a noted writer, was the guest of honour who addressed the assembly and presented her views regarding the importance  of Constantia and its legacy in the lives of all Martinians.

The day also witnessed the release of the College Annual magazine “Constantia”.

Founder’s Day Celebrations

Founders Day 2015

The celebration commenced with the laying of wreaths at the tomb of our Founder Major General Claude Martin. Wreaths were laid by the dignitaries present  which included our Former Principal Mr. Elton deSouza,  Principal Mr Carlyle McFarland , and Vice Principal Mr. Peter Collins .This was followed by a Chapel service conducted by our Principal. The service included Hymns and prayers. The Choir of La Martiniere Girls college presented the Hymn, What a Faithful God. The choir of La Martiniere College presented a Hymn, Let Freedom Ring.  The Founder’s Day address was delivered by Reverend Father Donald H.R. D’Souza, is the Chancellor and Spokesman of the Catholic Diocese Lucknow.

In the evening the Founder’s Day Variety Entertainment programme in English was held . This included dances , skits and choir performances by the students of the Junior school campus. An Operetta  named ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat ‘ was presented by the students of the Constantia campus.

In accordance with the Will of Our Founder a feast was given and a silent toast was raised by our Principal  in memory of our Founder Major General  Claude Martin.

Grateful Nation, Proud School

CELEBRATIONS IN HONOUR OF THE ALUMNI OF LA MARTINIERE COLLEGE, LUCKNOW DECORATED BY THE PRESIDENT FOR GALLANTRY IN INDEPENDENT INDIA.

The College organized a programme to honour the old boys of our school for their bravery and contribution towards the defence of our country. The Chief Guest for the morning’s programme was the Chief of the Indian Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha. A parade was presented by the three wings of the N.C.C (army , navy and air ) , the Rovers , the Scouts and the  cubs of our school . The parade was commanded by Mohd. Saqlain. Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha took the salute. This was followed by the presentations and citations about the lives and achievements of the  war veterans who were being honoured .The following are the names of the war veterans , who were honoured – (Late)Wing Commander Eric Pushong ,(Late) Wing Commander Trevor Keelor , Flight Lt. Alfred Tyrone Cooke, Air Mashal Denzil Keelor , Air Vice Marshal Perminder Singh and Commodore  Arvind Singh. The war heroes were presented tokens of appreciation for their contribution. Mrs Patricia Keelor accepted the token on behalf of her late husband, Air Marshal Trevor Keelor. All the war heroes addressed the boys . Air Mashal Denzil Keelor spoke at length about the vital  significance of the Gnat Fighter plane during the time of the Indo-Pak war .

This was followed by a brief address by Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha.The programme on East Terrace of Constantia concluded with a  Vote of Thanks by our Vice-Principal , Mr.Collins.

The platform party then moved towards the newly renovated Memorial Hall. A Tablet containing the names of the alumni  being recognized, was unveiled by Mrs Patricia Keelor.

This was followed by the inauguration of the  Memorial Park. The newly acquired Gnat Fighter Plane was also officially handed over to the College. Air Marshal Denzil Keelor again addressed the gathering and spoke about the importance of the Gnat towards the defence of India.

In the evening, the programme commenced with a Chapel Service in honour of the alumni who were being felicitated. The Chapel service consisted of hymns and readings chosen especially for this occasion. This was followed by a formal dedication of the Fourth Dormitory.

Later that evening the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh , Mr Akhilesh Yadav and his wife, Mrs Dimple Yadav, Member of Parliament, came to our school as Chief Guests . The combined bands of the Airforce and Army presented a wonderful selection of music. This was followed by a ‘Concert of Strings’ – a presentation by the Vienna University Orchestra. Mr Vijay Upadhaya, an old boy of our college  directed the orchestra. Mr. Akhilesh Yadav addressed the college and lauded the efforts and contribution of our Principal , Mr. McFarland.

The programme ended with a lavish dinner, hosted  by the Alumni of our college, in honour of our war heroes.

Frank Anthony Memorial-All India Inter School

A team of 2 participated in the regional round of “The Frank Anthony Memorial-All India Inter School” Debate Competition-2015”held on 18th August at the Lucknow Public Collegiate, after qualifying the city round held last month. The team was adjudged the ‘Best Team’ and Raghav Kholi won the ‘ Second Best Speaker’ award. The team will be representing the College in the prestigious ‘National Round’ in Dehradun in September.

14th Uttarakhand State Shooting Championship

The 14th Uttarakhand State Shooting Championship, organised by the Uttranchal State Rifle Association was held in Dehradun from 11th to 16th August, 2015 at the Jaspal Rana Shooting Academy. Seven boys from our college participated in different categories. Ishan Kalhans and Sanskar Haveliya of Class 9 were awarded the bronze medal in the Youth 10 meter peep sight air rifle team event, out of 1500 participants from across 5 states. Ishan Kalhans, Sanskar Haveliya and Sarthak Agarwal have also qualified for the pre-national competitions to be held in Asansol, West Bengal.

Celebrating 69th Indian Independence Day

Independence Day

As the National Flag flew high all over the country, La Martiniere College, Lucknow, celebrated the 69th Indian Independence Day with immense pride and zest. The various wings of the NCC along with the Rovers, Cubs and the College Band put up an immaculate parade in front of the East Terrace which was attended by the Chief Guest, Professor Alok Dhawan, along with his wife and son. Dr Dhawan, an old boy of the College is an eminent scientist in the field of biological sciences. Currently the Director of the Indian Institute of Toxicology Research, he has published several papers on his subject. He specializes in Nanomaterial Toxicology and Genetic Toxicology. A Fellow of the National Academy of sciences, India, Dr Dhawan is also the Vice President of the Environmental Mutagen Society of India and the Founder of the Indian Nanoscience Society. He has won the CSIR Young Scientist Award, 1999 in the field of Biological Sciences, Shakuntala Amir Chand Prize 2002 in the field of Biomedical Research, ICMR among other distinctions.
After hoisting the National Flag, the Chief Guest spoke on the need for scientific development in India and also reminisced about his days spent in the College. The cadets and the Band put on a befitting display to honour the National Flag in front of the Staff and students.

In the evening the Annual Entertainment Programme in Hindi was held. The boys of the Junior and Senior schools displayed their talents in music, dance and acting. For the play, the boys enacted ‘Chief Ki Dawat’ while pleasant songs of R D Burman among others, and passionate dances made for a memorable evening.

Prep. Dept. Independence Day

New folder

Preparatory Department celebrated Independence Day with a lot of zeal. This year great preparations were made in the Preparatory Department. Our tiny tots participated in an ‘Art Competition’ which was held on 14th August. The classrooms boards were decorated with children’s drawings and paintings. At the Annual Entertainment program in Hindi, our little heroes performed to the song ‘It happens only in India’.

On the 7th August 2015 students of Class X visited the College Farm as a part of their SUPW work. Mr Ram Dayal who is the gardener detailed the boys about the basics of gardening and horticulture. Boys also took keen interest in the activities related to agriculture and also took part in doing so.

La Martiniere College organized the 2nd Claude Martin Debate and Boulone Lise Quiz. Nine teams  had participated including our College. Five teams from the different parts of our country also participated. They included Rashtriya Indian Military College, Vasant Valley School, Sawai Man Singh School, Bishop Cotton School and La Martiniere Girls’ College, Kolkata. The local teams comprised of St. Francis’ College, Seth M.R. Jaipuria, La Martiniere Girls’ College, Lucknow and La Martiniere College.

For the second time the College hosted the BEYBLADE TOURNAMENT on 16/7/15 in the Activity Hall. Classes 5, 6 and 7 participated in the event.
The First position was bagged by the team ‘Eagle Eye’ led by Aman Raza. Team ‘Dark Dragon Destroyers’ lead by Priyansh Bhatnagar and ‘Four Galaxies’ led by Zain Ashraf came second and third respectively.

Pegasus 2015

La Martiniere College organized Pegasus 2015 on 11th July which included two events- Exotech (Robotics and Science Model Making) and Compuwiz.

In the first event, La Martiniere College stood second. Mohd Shaizan ofClass 7-B, Labib Khan of 7-F and Nilay Roy Choudhury of 8-D were the College’s representatives.

Compuwiz, though the College failed to win a prize the efforts of the participants were lauded by the judges. Akul Kumar of 6-B and Abhiram Krishna Shukla of 7-F were the boys who took part.
These events were organized almost exclusively by the boys of the College who left no stone unturned in making it successful. They included- Naman Mishra, Aditya Narain Mishra, Dhruv Sharma, Sahastranshu Sinha, Mohd Faizan, Mohd Nadeem, Jai Kapoor, Nishkarsh Singh, Amaan, Abhishek Tripathi, Naman Rastogi, Kanshika Chandra, Azhan Ali, Prakhar Saxena, Okasha Hasan, and Mohd Zaid Hussain.

The results of the Middle School Elocution Contest in English were declared. In Division D, Parv Johar of 5-B and Ishit Dev Sinha of 6-C stood First, followed by Abhigya Talwar of 6-B (third position).
In Division C, Garv Kalra of 7-E bagged the First position while Ashley Hamiln of 7-C and Nilay Roy Choudhary of 8-D tied for Second position.

The Class 7 hockey league match was held on 15th July 2015. Class 7-C played against 7-D and class 7C won by 1-0. The goal was scored by Habib Haider.

The Class 7 D team comprised of Samhav Shukla, Devashish Mishra, Trijit Gupta, Kartikeya Gupta, Ashar Arif, Adarsh Jaiswal, Mustafa Hussain, Shaswat Gupta, Rudra Arora, Joy Sarrow, and Khubaib Ali Warsi.

Class 7 C, the winning team, comprised of Farhan Waziri, Habib Haider, Shriyam Agarwal, Vivek Singh, Aman Ansari, Ahmad Khalid, Azhan Khan, Ayush Mishra, Siddharth Tiwari, Arpan Singh and Faud Ansari.

La Martiniere College participated in the Frank Anthony All India Interschool Debate. In category I, Our team comprising of Raghav Kohli and Dhruv Sinha were declared the 1st runners up. Raghav Kohli was also adjudged the 1st runner up speaker.

In Category II, our team comprised of Varenya Vir Singh and Vedansh Tandon. They were awarded the prize for the 1st runner up team. Varenya Vir Singh won the 1st runner up speaker award.
Both the teams have qualified for the 2nd round.

The bilingual presentation of the speech (In French and English) added colour the Assembly. The confidence and fluency with which the speech was delivered was laudable.

A Shooting Competition was held at Muzaffarnagar, where Sanskar Havelia took part in Balyan Shooting Competetion and won Silver Medal. At Glory Shooting Academy(Gagang Narang), Dev Chandra, who was earlier selected for training at ‘Guns for Glory’, was awarded the first rank and has been selected for the next level of training with twenty others from all over India.

The 31st Uttar Pradesh, state Taekwondo Championship was held on th 16th & 17th of May 2015 at the K.D.Singh Babu Stadium. A total of 7 boys participated in the event. In the sub- junior category, Varun Rana won a Bronze Medal. In the junior category Prateek Manjul won  a Bronze medal and Tauheed Raza won a Gold medal in the Senior category. Raza also won an award for refreeship. The other participants were Subh Pratap Singh, Abhav Bhatnagar, Deepansh Gurnai and Sarthak Agarwal.

Rohan Verma of Hodson House and Kautabh Kant Misra from Martin House were made House Prefects. Shubham Pandey and Shashwat Kumar were made Senior and Junior Monitors from Cornwallis House. Shubham Chowdhary and Adrin Atkins of Lyons House were made Senior & Junior Monitor respectively. Sunal Chandre and Avaym Gupta from Hodson House were made Junior and Senior Monitor respectively.

College participated in Various MUN’s

The College participated in a series of Model United Nations events.

In the Model United Nations organized by The Millennium School Lucknow, on the 8th & 9th May 2015 and  Vedansh Tandon was declared the best delegate. Revant Batra, Aditya Jalan and Akshat Rastogi received special mention. Izhan Abbas successfully chaired the UN Security Council.

In the 2nd event organized by Seth. M.R. Jaipuria School, Lucknow on the 4th & 5th of July our boys performed well. Vedansh Tandon, Shikhar Tripathi, Arunam Gupta, Revant Batra & Vighnesh Mehrotra also received mention. Aditya Jalan was declared the most outstanding delegate.  Kaustubh Kant Mishra recieved the award for the best Journalist.

Our boys also participated in the Model United Nations organized by La Martiniere College Kolkata in May 2015. Varenya Vir Singh & Izhan Abbas received awards for outstanding candidate and special mention, respectively.

The College also took part in the first Annual La Martiniere Girls Model United Nations 2015. The team was declared the best delegation.  Revant Batra, Shrey  Kumar, Varenya Vir Singh, Naman Srivastava & Harsh Karamchandani received honourable mention.  Aditya Jalan was awarded as the outstanding delegate.  Shikhar Tripathi  and Karan David received best delegates awards

Annual Prize Day

La Martiniere College Lucknow celebrated its Annual Prize Day on the 8th May 2015, with Mr Ram Naik, Governor of Uttar Pradesh as the Chief Guest. The tastefully decorated East Terrace provided the backdrop for the distribution of awards in all spheres of College life.

Following the academic procession, the Governor was presented a national salute by all contingents of the NCC, Scouts and Cubs. The Principal’s annual report was released on the occasion. The choir presented two songs. A film summarising the events in the College was screened.

Students from all sections from classes 1 to 12 were awarded for academic merit. Medals, cups and shields were presented for individual as well as House activity. Lyons House was awarded the Lord Chelmsford Cup as Cock House. Utsav Garg and Vikramaditya Vir Singh were awarded for topping the ISC and ICSE examinations. The Governor’s Trophy for Leadership was presented to Anurag Shah. Pranjal Saxena was awarded a special prize for Example and Inspiration.

The Governor addressed the boys and their parents. The ceremony ended with the College Song.

Evening Bazaar at La Martiniere College

The Evening Bazaar was organized on the 2nd May 2015. It was set up on the College ‘Fairydale’ grounds. The Bazaar started at 6:30 pm and continued till 10:30 pm. Parents & students enjoyed the evening. A raffle was held. The proceeds from the raffle and the sale of coupons shall go towards the Conservation of Constantia.

Mock Drill at La Martiniere

Mock Drill 04

In view of the recent earthquake and tremors a surprise mock drill was conducted in our school at 10:30 am. The school gong was rung continually. This is a sign of an emergency in school. The entire school was evacuated and the students were told to assemble on East Terrace. It took around 3 minutes for the entire school to assemble. The Principal then addressed the students and congratulated them for their successful exercise of what should be done in case of an emergency.

Hope Initiative Quiz

The Intra School round of the Hope Initiative   Quiz was conducted in  Spence Hall on the 29th April 2015. There were 13 teams comprising of 2 members . The quiz had  questions related to health, global warming and other environment related problems.

The team comprising of Karan David  of 12 C & Rishabh Singh of  12 C  stood first and received a Gold Medal. They shall represent the College for the Inter School Quiz which will be held on 7th May 2015 at Paryatan Bhawan, Gomti Nagar. Jatin Basal of class 9 A & Neil Nautiyal of class 10 A won the Silver Medal.

India Shooting Championship

 The 3rd Shri Bahadur Singh Memorial All India Shooting Championship organized by Dronacharya Shooting Academy was held in Panipat (Haryana) from 4th to 6th April. Ishan Kalhans and Sansjkar Havelia of Class 8 participated in this All India event. They were accompanied by our shooting coach Mr Vikas Tomar. They were awarded gold medals in 10 mts peep sight Air Rifle team shooting event. Sanskar Havelia also got an individual gold medal in the sub-junior category (8-13) of the same event

Retirement of two members of Staff

A Chapel Service was held on the 28th March 2015 to commemorate the retirement of two members of staff.

Mr Derrick Crawford Clarke was born on 13 June, 1954. He grew up in Lucknow. He was a pupil at La Martiniere Girls’ College and later at La Martiniere College till 1973. Having completed his Teacher Training from Mount Herman Teachers’ Training College, Darjeeling in 1974, he joined the Staff of La Martiniere College in 1980. The erstwhile Principal of the College, Lt Col H.R.H. Daniell described him as “a hard-working and steady student … (with a) reserved, pleasant personality and a good moral character.”

While in College, he took an active part in games, including Hockey, Boxing, Swimming and Football. His interests extended to English Drama, choral singing and the NCC. He has almost always resided on the campus from the time of his appointment.

In 2011 Mr Clarke was appointed as Housemaster, Martin House. In view of his long, distinguished and loyal contribution to the College, the Local Committee of Governors was pleased to elevate Mr Clarke to the post of 2nd Assistant in May, 2013. He has been the senior-most member of Staff in the College whose sagacity has been relied upon in decision making.

Mr Derrick Clarke is making home with his son on La Martiniere estate, where the College shall have occasion to consult him on matters of interest.

 

Mrs Neelum Singh was born on 18 June, 1953. Having completed her schooling in Bareilly, she graduated from Loreto Degree College. She then earned three Masters’ Degrees in Political Science, History and English, besides a Bachelor of Education degree. She joined the Staff of La Martiniere College after having gained nearly thirteen years of teaching experience.

As a student, Mrs Singh was deeply interested in Basketball, Badminton, Swimming, rifle-shooting and Softball. Her interest in co-curricular activities, including debating has led to her being the Secretary of the College Debating Team. Under her guidance, the Debating Team of the College is well known. Firm, but caring, she has endeared herself to the senior-most boys of the College to whom she has taught English and Political Science.

The Chapel Service was followed by farewell dinner.
